Our latest addition to the Dustpan Recordings family is DJ/Producer, Max Verrier. Having just released his single “Work A Muscle” we asked him a few questions where he writes from his home/our home in the tropical city of Singapore.
What is your most memorable experience DJing/Producing?
Djing: When after my first proper gig a guest came to me saying he loved the music all night, hearing that for the first time is priceless.
Producing: Playing around and making something sound really awesome not entirely on purpose for the first time.
Why do you think your fan base is so loyal to you and your sound?
I think I work in an environment where adaptating to the crowd and reading them is essential, whether in a club or at the beach. I always try to make sure I’m playing to the crowd that’s there and never deceive them, unless stated otherwise.
Look out for…
A new release soon…
How did you become a DJ?
After working in events/entertainment/nightlife for a few years. I decided one day it was enough and time for me to take the decks.
What goes on in your mind when you are DJ-ing?
Have fun ! Experiment ! Where shall I go !
Is there a ‘musical message’ you try to get across during your sets?
It depends on where I’m playing, what type of set and venue. In general in a dance environment I always believe there should be a story and a progression in a DJ’s set. A guest should think ‘’damn, what’s he got up his sleeves next?!’’
Aside from music, tell our fans something they don’t know about yourself – ie hobby? weird proclivities?
I spend a lot of time directly and indirectly working around music. When I DJ or when I curate entertainment and plan events, music is always there no matter what. On my head or at the tip of my fingers. Any time I find myself I try to spend on sports, health and staying healthy to balance the work/life balance. Urging myself to make more time to make music !
Who are your mentors and/or what inspires you and your music?
Mentors go all the way from my father who transmitted his great taste in music and his records and CD’s from the past since I was young. All the way to my follow DJ/Producer friends and colleagues that constantly keep me surrounded by good music. I feel like the first step that inspired me to DJ or to produce is hearing tracks and special vocals that make me feel something.
What do you find most challenging about the music business today?
There is WAY too much good music out there. You need to really keep pushing yourself and the music boundaries to succeed, be heard and spread your music !
What’s the “best thing in life” in your opinion?
The best things in life I would sum up to: Love, Family, Music, Success, Creativity
What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
Listen and learn.
If you could have a super power, what would it be?
Music you listen to when you’re at home?
Lots of HipHop/Rnb/Nu Soul/Deep House/Nu-Disco
